Launch Image Sizes Cheat Sheet: X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Product Hunt, and Slides

Every image size a SaaS launch needs on one page - link previews, X posts, LinkedIn, Instagram feed and stories, Product Hunt, and pitch slides - plus how to make the whole set from one URL.

  • social media image sizes
  • launch assets
  • instagram story size
  • x post image size

A launch is not one image. It is a link preview, a post for X, a LinkedIn update, an Instagram story, a Product Hunt gallery, and a slide for the investor update - all on the same day, all showing the same product.

Here is every size on one page, with the reasoning behind each, and a way to produce the set without rebuilding it six times.

The cheat sheet

Where Size (px) Ratio Use it for
Link preview (Open Graph) 1200 × 630 1.91:1 Any shared URL: X, LinkedIn, Slack, iMessage
X post image 1600 × 900 16:9 Images attached directly to a post
LinkedIn feed image 1200 × 627 or 1080 × 1350 1.91:1 or 4:5 Landscape for links, portrait for reach
Instagram feed 1080 × 1350 4:5 Takes the most screen space in the feed
Square (any feed) 1080 × 1080 1:1 Safe default when unsure
Story (Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp) 1080 × 1920 9:16 Full-screen vertical
Product Hunt gallery 1270 × 760 ~5:3 Launch page gallery
Slide / deck 1920 × 1080 16:9 Pitch decks, demo days, investor updates

Notes by platform

Link previews (1200 × 630)

This is the image behind every pasted link. It is controlled by your page's og:image tag, not by the post you write. Keep text and logos in the centre, since X and messaging apps trim the edges. The full breakdown is in the Open Graph image size guide.

X posts (1600 × 900)

Images attached to a post display best at 16:9. Use this for the launch announcement itself, where you want the full product visible in the timeline. A laptop mockup fits the shape naturally.

LinkedIn (landscape or portrait)

Landscape (1200 × 627) matches link previews. Portrait (1080 × 1350) takes more vertical space in the feed on mobile, which usually means more attention. For a launch post, a phone mockup or a stacked laptop + phone in portrait stands out from the wall of landscape link cards.

Instagram feed (1080 × 1350) and stories (1080 × 1920)

Instagram favours portrait. For stories, keep the top and bottom ~250 px clear - the profile bar and reply box cover them. A single phone mockup centred on a gradient is the cleanest story format for a web product.

Product Hunt (1270 × 760)

Its own ratio - do not reuse 16:9 slides. The order of images matters as much as the images. See the Product Hunt gallery guide.

Slides (1920 × 1080)

For decks, the device should fill most of the slide with generous margins for a title. Dark slides make device frames pop; light slides need a soft shadow so the device does not float.

One product, one look

The hardest part of a launch set is not the sizes. It is consistency. When the X image uses one background, the Product Hunt gallery another, and the story a third, the launch reads as three different products.

Pick three things and keep them fixed across every size:

  1. One background (or one family of gradients).
  2. One device colour - space black or silver.
  3. One padding level, so the device takes the same share of every canvas.

Making the whole set from one URL

The slow way is to take screenshots, then rebuild the composition in a design tool for each canvas. The fast way is to capture the page once and change only the canvas:

  1. Paste your URL into URL2Mockup and choose laptop + phone.
  2. Pick your background, device colour, and padding once.
  3. Switch the canvas - Open Graph, X / Twitter, Product Hunt, Square, Portrait, Story, Slide - and download each.

Every export uses the same capture and the same style, so the set is consistent by construction. Styling, canvas changes, and HD downloads do not cost extra credits - you only pay for the capture.

FAQ

What image size works on every social platform?

There is no single size that is ideal everywhere, but 1080 × 1080 (square) is the safest fallback for feeds, and 1200 × 630 is the standard for link previews.

What is the Instagram story size?

1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16). Keep important content away from the top and bottom ~250 pixels, where Instagram's interface overlays the image.

What size should images in an X post be?

1600 × 900 (16:9) displays without cropping in most views. Link previews on X use your page's Open Graph image instead.
